Why Horses?
The way of the horse offers timeless wisdom when we truly listen.
Inextricably interconnected with the natural world, they exist moment by moment as sensing, perceiving, feeling, responding beings.
Horse wisdom beckons us into the here and now, as we commune in shared space, vibration, and energy, dropping us into the truth of each moment.
Horses are healers, generously offering the experience of “feeling felt” through the authentic dance of resonance and heart centered co-regulation.
With every rhythmic steadying beat, their beautiful hearts have the capacity to slow us down, ground us into the earth, become embodied, and attune us into the energetic dance of the seen and unseen forces surrounding us.
The majestic horse presence has the innate capacity to change us through quiet solace, safety, and the warmth of their gentle companionship.
Horses are truth tellers. They mirror our internal state, bypassing the persona we may be choosing to project into the world. They hold space for the entire continuum of our human experience.
Horses are guides, externalizing where we may be holding unprocessed emotional energy, where we are out of balance, experiencing stuck-ness, brace, and under the trance of false, limiting beliefs about ourself and others.
The reflection and space they offer has the profound capacity to invite us into our wisdom, to access our authentic power, to experience the beauty of our highest self, to open us to deep connection, compassion, curiosity and the infinite field of love.

Horse-Guided Counselling in Foothills County, Alberta
Horse-guided (equine-guided) counselling is a nature-based form of therapy where horses become part of the healing process. Sessions are led by me, Toni Harris, a Registered Psychologist, on my acreage in Foothills County, near Okotoks and a short, scenic drive from Calgary.
All of the work happens on the ground, alongside the horses. There is no riding, and no experience with horses is needed. Many people find that being with the horses helps them feel, notice and understand things that are hard to reach through talking alone.
Worth the drive
Because horse-guided counselling with a Registered Psychologist is a rare offering, people travel from across Southern Alberta to work with the horses. That includes Calgary, High River, Diamond Valley, Airdrie, Cochrane, Canmore and Lethbridge. If you’ve been searching for equine therapy near you and haven’t found the right fit, this may be worth the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is horse-guided counselling?
Horse-guided counselling, also called equine-guided or equine-assisted therapy, is therapy that takes place alongside horses. The horses respond to your body language and nervous system in the moment, which can help bring emotions and patterns to the surface in a gentle, natural way.
Do I need to ride or have experience with horses?
No. All sessions are ground-based, so there’s no riding, and you don’t need any experience with horses.
What does “co-regulation” with horses mean?
Co-regulation is how one nervous system can help another settle. Horses are deeply attuned to the people around them, and spending quiet time with a calm horse can help your own breathing, heart rate and sense of safety slow down and steady.
Where are horse-guided sessions held?
Sessions take place on my acreage in Foothills County, Alberta, near Okotoks. It’s a short, scenic drive from Calgary and within reach for a day trip from much of Southern Alberta. The exact address is shared when you book.
Is horse-guided counselling covered by benefits?
Coverage varies by plan. Because sessions are led by a Registered Psychologist, check with your benefits provider, and feel free to ask me about it during your free consultation.
